Victoria Nuland’s Fabricated Quote is Disseminated Under Radio Liberty’s Visuals

Verdict: FAKE NEWS

A fabricated quote which is attributed to the US Under Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, is being disseminated in social networks under Radio Liberty’s visuals. According to the publication, Ms Nuland stated that Volodymyr Zelensky’s widow will be able to be granted US citizenship in an accelerated manner.

This quote does not belong to Victoria Nuland. According to the accompanying photo, mention is made that an article, entitled “Нуланд: вдова Зеленского сможет в ускоренном формате получить гражданство США” (“Nuland:  Zelensky’s widow will be able to be granted US citizenship in an accelerated manner”), was published on Radio Liberty’s website on 23 February 2023. However, no such article can be found either on Radio Liberty’s Russian or English websites. In addition, there is no such statement on Radio Liberty’s official Facebook account.

On 23 February 2023, Radio Liberty published Victoria Nuland’s statement made in response to the Washington Post’s question about giving Ukraine fourth and fifth generation fighter jets. On 23 February 2023, in her interview with the Washington Post, Ms Nuland discussed the US role in the ongoing conflict as well as main priorities for American foreign policy. She stated that Washington is considering supplying Ukraine with fighter jets. The American diplomat also clarified that the decision about transferring fighter jets will be made after assessing Kyiv’s needs. The full transcript of this interview is available on the Washington Post’s website. Ms Nuland did not make any statement that would be identical or similar to that mentioned in the aforementioned publication.

Looking up the quote “Нуланд: вдова Зеленского сможет в ускоренном формате получить гражданство США” leads us to untrustworthy Russian websites such as dzen.ru, discred.ru, cont.ws, topwar.ru, mk.ru. None of the websites have a source of the quote indicated.

Therefore, the quote “Нуланд: вдова Зеленского сможет в ускоренном формате получить гражданство США,” disseminated by a Facebook user under Radio Liberty’s visuals, is fake. Victoria Nuland has not made such a statement and Radio Liberty has not published such a quote.
